The ICANN Verisign Agreement - What a Sham. Write Your Senator!

So I read some literature about this agreement and the Bob Parsons blog which Opposes the ICANN Verisign Agreement and next thing I know I'm writing my senator to do my duty as a citizen. You can do the same.

Senator Cannon,

I appreciate the work you do in behalf of the citizens of Utah. I'll brief as I know you are busy.

The US Department of Commerce will soon have to approve an agreement regarding web site addresses that Verisign could have control over for the .COM registry.

I'm am totally opposed to the new ICANN-VeriSign agreement. Allowing any company to run the cost of domains creates a potential monopoly, allows too much control over the internet in general and affects business owners such as myself.

Verisign has already stated it will raise the cost of .COM domains 7% once the US Dept. of Commerce approves the agreement.

Businesses such as my own, rely upon steady costs of domains to provide service to our clients. As a web design company, we buy several domains monthly for customers and marketing purposes. Currently we have in possession 550 plus domains, 90% of which are .COM domains. Should the price suddenly increase by 7% - my cost of $4328 per year in .COM domains will increase by at least $300 of which I will have to pass those costs onto my clients.

If there is any voice you can portray - it is that general consumers and especially web design firms, registrars like GoDaddy, 1and1.com and many others will too have to pass the cost of one organizations price increase to millions of citizens who "own" their own domains - yet have to still renew annually.

In essence, Versign is becoming in control of a utility if you will in that citizens rely on .COM domains for commerce and a place to name their business online, and there is no competition for companies like Verisign to compete with.

I appreciate your time and effort to pass this information to the appropriate parties.
